Heating and driving a steam train workshop – 2 days

020+020T MALLET

General information :

The locomotive used will be the 020+020T Mallet N° 10416 ex ABC (AVRICOURT-BLAMONT-CIREY) from 1911, listed as a historical monument since 1987.

The maximum number of participants for this course is 6 (excluding accompanying persons).

Detailed program :

This 2-day workshop includes an overnight stay for all trainees in the ex-CIWL No. 3941 sleeping car restored by the Train Thur Doller Alsace association.

Meals on Saturday evening, Sunday morning and Sunday lunchtime are included in the workshop for participants.

Additional meals and overnight stays can be arranged for accompanying persons, subject to prior reservation. It is also possible for accompanying persons to take photos on site.

First day :

2:00 p.m. start at Burnhaupt-le-Haut train station
Opening :
Presentation of workshop organization
Presentation of accommodation and allocation of cabins
Safety instructions for the site and on board the locomotive
Change of clothes at the station (each trainee brings his/her own equipment, see General Terms and Conditions)
3:00 p.m. exit of the machine from the warehouse and firing
4:00 p.m. Return to the training room, followed by a snack:
Presentation of the Train Thur Doller Alsace association
Explanation on how a steam engine works
Supervision of ignition
6:00 p.m. Preparing the locomotive for storage
7:00 p.m. Local meal on the railway station site

Once the meal is over, trainees are free to return to their cabs in the sleeping car parked in front of the station.

Second day :

Special trains run on the entire Cernay St André / Sentheim line, with 2 or 3 trainees on board the locomotive. While 2 of the trainees are working on the locomotive, the other 2 will be aboard a coupled carriage. Thanks to its front open platform, nothing can be missed on the locomotive. The trainees will take it in turns to warm up and drive the locomotive, taking on the roles of fireman and locomotive driver under the responsibility of the regular fireman and locomotive driver.

As the line is crossed by several roads, the manual operation of railway crossings will enhance the experience. During maneuvers, trainees will also learn how to set out routes, carry out maneuvers, etc.

6:00 a.m. All trainees wake up and get dressed in the station locker room for machine relighting.
7:00 a.m. At the latest, set up the machine at the depot and relight it.
7:30 a.m. Breakfast
8:00 a.m.Return to locomotive for final preparation:
Complete greasing (200 points)
Start-up of auxiliaries (air pump, condensation lubricator, cylinder heater, etc.)
Mechanical checks and general cleaning
9:30 a.m.Placement of the machine on a train with one or more passenger cars (which can be boarded by accompanying persons)
9:45 a.m. Departure towards Cernay (diagram at bottom of page):
When passing through Burnhaupt, the machine is topped up with water using the water crane.
12h00 p.m./1:00 p.m.Lunch at Burnhaupt station
1:45 p.m. Restart of operations only on the Sentheim / Burnhaupt section of the line
5:30 p.m. Storage of the locomotive: filling with water, extraction and cleaning
6:15 p.m. End of program: distribution of certificate and membership card.

Prices :

  • 2-day workshop including 3 meals, 1 overnight stay and association membership: : 700 €
  • Accompanying person package including 3 meals and 1 overnight stay : 100 €
  • Accompanying person package including 1 overnight stay : 60 €

These rates are subject to the TTDA’s General Terms and Conditions, which are attached to the booking form.

  • Please specify the name of the person booking AND the name of the lucky trainee.
  • You have the option of paying the full amount or paying a deposit of half the amount to make a definitive reservation. (In the case of a deposit, full payment must be made 1 month before the course start date).

Clothing :

  • Sturdy, grease and dirt resistant clothing, 100% cotton
  • safety or walking shoes, preferably high-top
  • leather gloves
  • scarf
  • cap
  • earplugs recommended

The minimum number of participants is 2. If this number is not reached, the TTDA reserves the right to postpone the session to a later date.

Reservations will only be confirmed upon receipt of the workshop fee 1 month before the desired date. Confirmation will be sent to you by post or e-mail by our office staff.

No refunds will be made for cancellations made less than 15 days before the date of the session.

For people coming from far away and wishing to be accommodated in the area, the Masevaux and Cernay Tourist Offices can suggest places to stay, as well as ideas for visits, walks, etc. Our region is not short of attractions!

Driving directions :

– If you are coming from the A36: Take exit N° 15 then follow Masevaux then as below.

– If you’re coming from the RD83: Take the Masevaux exit, then: At the Pont d’Aspach roundabout, follow Masevaux for about 600m, then turn left just before the railway crossing, and you’ll arrive directly at the station.

– If you’re using a GPS, you’ll need to program in the following address: “17 Route de Guewenheim 68520 Burnhaupt-le-Haut”, which corresponds to the restaurant on the corner with rue de la gare.
