Heating and driving a steam train workshop – 1 day

Have you ever dreamed of stepping onto a steam locomotive? Would you like to experience an adventure in a faithfully preserved railway environment? Would you like to experience the thrill of firing up and driving a steam locomotive? Then sign up for a day to remember! General information :

The locomotive used will be the 030T La Meuse n° 51 from 1914 or the 030T Couillet n° 1658 from 1912.

The maximum number of participants is 4 (excluding accompanying persons).

Detailed program :

This course takes place over 1 day. Saturday lunch is included for participants.

  • 8:00 a.m. Latest arrival of trainees at Burnhaupt le Haut railway station
  • The machine exits the depot (one of the instructors)
  • Check-in :
    • Change of clothes at the station (each trainee brings his/her own equipment, see terms and conditions)
    • Safety instructions for the site and on board the locomotive
  • 8:30/9:15 a.m. Machine firing
    Return to training room, breakfast offered

    • Presentation of the Doller Train Association (TTDA)
    • Explanation on how a steam engine works
  • Visit of the warehouse
  • 11:30 a.m. Back to the locomotive warming up: further explanations of operation + continuation of preparations
  • 12:45 /2:00 p.m. Lunch in the train station
  • 2:30 p.m. Start of train movements:
    • Circulation will take place on the Burnhaupt/Sentheim portion of the line (see attached line profile), with a maximum of 2 trainees on board the locomotive.
    • While 2 of the trainees are working on the locomotive, the other 2 will be aboard a coupled carriage. Thanks to its front open platform, nothing can be missed on the locomotive. The trainees will take it in turns to warm up and drive the locomotive, taking on the roles of fireman and locomotive driver under the responsibility of the regular fireman and locomotive driver.
    • As the line is crossed by a road, the manual operation of the Guewenheim railway crossing will enhance the journey.
    • Trainees will also learn how to operate the switches.
  • 5:00 p.m Locomotive storage, watering and cleaning
  • 6:00 p.m. End of the program and delivery of the “Baptême de chauffe et conduite d’une locomotive à vapeur” certificate.

Prices :

  • Price for the day: 400 € including benefactor membership ( mandatory for insurance purposes), workshop and lunch.

These rates are subject to the TTDA Steam Workshop Terms and Conditions, which are attached to the booking form.

  • Please specify the name of the person booking AND the name of the lucky trainee.
  • You have the option of paying the full amount or paying a deposit of half the amount to make a definitive reservation. (In the case of a deposit, full payment must be made 1 month before the course start date).

Clothing :

  • Sturdy, grease and dirt resistant clothing, 100% cotton
  • safety or walking shoes, preferably high-top
  • leather gloves
  • scarf
  • cap
  • earplugs recommended

The minimum number of participants is 2. If this number is not reached, the TTDA reserves the right to postpone the session to a later date.

Reservations will only be confirmed upon receipt of the workshop fee 1 month before the desired date. Confirmation will be sent to you by post or e-mail by our office staff.

No refunds will be made for cancellations made less than 15 days before the date of the session.

For people coming from far away and wishing to be accommodated in the area, the Masevaux and Cernay Tourist Offices can suggest places to stay, as well as ideas for visits, walks, etc. Our region is not short of attractions!

Driving directions :

– If you are coming from the A36: Take exit N° 15 then follow Masevaux then as below.

– If you’re coming from the RD83: Take the Masevaux exit, then: At the Pont d’Aspach roundabout, follow Masevaux for about 600m, then turn left just before the railway crossing, and you’ll arrive directly at the station.

– If you’re using a GPS, you’ll need to program in the following address: “17 Route de Guewenheim 68520 Burnhaupt-le-Haut”, which corresponds to the restaurant on the corner with rue de la gare.
